Rank tracking (google)
Step-by-step guide to creating rank tracking groups and adding keywords.
What is rank tracking?
Rank tracking monitors your website's position in Google search results for specific keywords. When someone searches for "Portland marketing consultant," knowing whether you appear on page 1 (positions 1-10) or page 5 helps you understand your SEO performance.
Why track rankings?
- Measure SEO progress - See if your optimization efforts are working
- Identify opportunities - Find keywords where you're close to page 1
- Spot problems early - Catch ranking drops before they impact traffic
- Benchmark competitors - Understand where you stand in your market
- Prioritize efforts - Focus on keywords with the best ROI potential
How to use rank tracking
Setting up tracking
- Navigate to Keywords → Rank Tracking tab
- Add keywords you want to track (or use existing keyword concepts)
- Set your target location for localized results
- Click Check Rank to get current positions
Reading results
Each keyword shows:
- Desktop position - Your rank on desktop searches
- Mobile position - Your rank on mobile searches (often different)
- Position change - Movement since last check (↑ improved, ↓ declined)
Position color coding
- 🟢 Green (#1-3) - Top positions, excellent visibility
- 🔵 Blue (#4-10) - First page, good visibility
- 🟡 Amber (#11-20) - Second page, needs improvement
- ⚫ Gray (>20) - Low visibility, significant work needed
Understanding the data
Desktop vs. Mobile
Rankings often differ between devices because:
- Google uses mobile-first indexing
- Local results vary by device
- Screen size affects which results appear "above the fold"
Diviner One tracks both desktop and mobile at the same time to help you get the complete picture.
Location matters
Search results are personalized by location. A "plumber" search in Portland shows different results than in Seattle. Always track rankings for your target service area.
Fluctuations are normal
Rankings can move daily due to:
- Google algorithm updates
- Competitor activity
- Content freshness signals
- Personalization factors
Look at trends over weeks, not daily changes.
Tracking strategies
Core service keywords
Track your main services + location:
- "[service] + [city]"
- "[service] near me"
- "best [service] in [city]"
Long-tail variations
Track specific phrases with less competition:
- "[service] for [specific need]"
- "affordable [service] in [neighborhood]"
- "[service] that [specific benefit]"
Branded keywords
Track your business name to monitor brand visibility:
- "[Your Business Name]"
- "[Your Business Name] reviews"
- "[Your Business Name] [city]"
Tips for improving rankings
- Optimize Google Business Profile - Complete all fields, add photos, get reviews
- Build local citations - Consistent NAP across directories
- Create location pages - Dedicated pages for each service area
- Earn quality backlinks - Get mentioned on relevant local sites
- Publish helpful content - Answer questions your customers ask
- Improve site speed - Fast loading improves rankings
- Mobile optimization - Ensure great mobile experience
How often to check
- Weekly for important keywords
- Monthly for broader tracking
- After changes when you update your site or GMB profile
Avoid checking too frequently—daily fluctuations can be misleading.
